My experience of 6th grade so far has been amazing! All of the freedom you receive as a 6th grader is a interesting new experience. I have learned so much in the first quarter of 6th grade in Mr. Funk’s class. The way Mr. Funk teaches math is a amazing method. He does an amazing job of explaining and makes learning enjoyable! Science is something I do not really enjoy, but hopefully I will like it more by the end of the year. I have big goals to keep my grades up throughout all of 6th grade and I think Mr. Funk will help me reach this goal.

Welcome to my class website! We will go over it together in class so you can see the different things that I have set up and you can make suggestions for things that you would like to have added. I'm looking forward to starting this school year and getting to know all of you tomorrow!
Wednesday is a day everybody likes. School starting late helps everybody (almost). This Wednesday started out good. Our class began the day with a warm up of science workbook pages and spelling workbook pages. People started turning them in, so I started working. After warm up, Mr. Funk started calling out chromebooks, so people could start to finish up on their state reports, D.A.R.E. reports, and Student Treasures Publishing Book. I turned in my state report which was on Hawaii. I was about add my final touches to my D.A.R.E. report when Mr. Funk told #33-20 to log out and turn our chromebooks in. I took my computer to the cart and sat back down. Table groups started lining up for recess. Many of the boys (including me) were upset that we had to line up in number order. We had to wait until our lines were good to go outside for recess. I don't know how it happened, but our number order line restriction was lifted. The boys were happy, but noisy. The girls had to line up in number order. The boys happily went off to recess with the girls following behind. So the moral of the story is : Be good. You will be rewarded. Eh. Too classic. The new moral of the story is : With great privileges comes great responsibility.

Everybody should always be thankful for what they have, Thanksgiving or not. That's what I learned today. Being absent for two days last week, I had to take a benchmark test. Yet I was irritated, not being prepared. But after a while, not only did I realize that it wasn't a test to be prepared for and a test that measures your general knowledge, but I figured that if I were to be in middle school or high school at that moment, I wouldn't get a second chance, and I would be in BIG trouble. So, today I learned that Thankfulness comes in handy to help you in the future with Reality.

It definitely isn't our fault if we happen to get sick and we can't go to school. But School isn't the only place that gives you education. Life itself can teach you only so many lessons in just one day.

We were allowed to either research and write notes for our state report, or write our story for a published book that our class was going to make. For the state report, we were suppose to write down some notes on a piece of paper Mr. Funk gave us, then start writing a report about our state. When we finished our report, we would use the information to make a state float. I am really excited about making the float because it seems really fun to design a float to represent your state. I am also looking forward to writing a story for my class's published book. Everyone is suppose to write a story that can be fiction or non-fiction. We would put the stories together in a book that would get published. That is one of the main things we did today, and I am really looking forward to working more on these projects.
After science lab we made a story non-fiction or fiction with different rules that we had to include in our story. Then in social studies we continued learning about colonies and the Revolutionary War.
A classmate next to me jumped in panic and made me giggle. I could hear Mr. Funk give a low sigh of impatience and disappointment although I didn't mind missing extra class time. As we walked out the door I could see kids dragging their feet droopily along the floor with annoyance. I could see we hadn't started the day off on a good start. Teachers were frantically running around and making sure they hadn’t lost children. The classes were sitting in a line tired and probably regretting getting up for school today. Mrs. Galleti came up on the loudspeaker and announced it hadn't been a drill.

Mrs. Galleti came on the loudspeakers again and announced that balloons touching the ceiling turned on the fire alarm? Why and how could balloons touching the ceiling turn on the fire alarm?! As we walked back to our class I again say people who were clearly annoyed and heard sentences will utter anger including “why did they made us do that” and “ that was stupid, balloons”. I just sighed and made my way back to the classroom.

When we got back to the classroom everybody started talking and Mr. Funk had the sudden urge to say ‘waterfall’ as he always does. Many people had started quieting down but some refused. Mr. Funk had then told us to grab a piece of binder paper and write a reflection about how we liked the living Museum. I of course had many thoughts some good and some bad and I could tell my classmates had them too. After we were done he asked us to write a number at the bottom of the page. We are supposed to read the whiteboard when we come in everyday and there was a number at the bottom. Many people had not read the board and were very upset. I didn't read the board either but I didn't care, I mean no student is perfect. My day wasn't going great and it all started by that crazy morning.
We had the Living Museum and many classes came to see us with our costumes and artifacts on our table. Some of our parents came and saw us present our speeches. Before the Living Museum I wasn't that nervous but I was afraid that I would forget my lines. And unfortunately I did forget my lines a couple times. I also had a hard time putting my artifacts up on the table on time. But the rest of the things went well. I hope to do something like this (but a little easier) in the future.
Everyone is supposed to hustle and get their artifacts, memorized speech, and photo done! I was nervous because public speaking is not really my regular thing. Luckily, I was prepared, sort of. My mom and I worked on the remaining artifacts, and we did a lot of research on recently played basketball games. Yes, it was really tiring. So far, the artifacts were the hardest part. At school, the last minute Living Museum Prep was taking up part of the day. After recess, Mrs. Lack came in for storytime. I thought she came in for the Living Museum stuff. Her class is doing it too. I think everyone's nervous, especially me because I don't like memorizing speeches. I wish everyone luck on their speeches tomorrow!
Some people wore mustaches and a person (which was me) wore a mustache and a wig! Some people memorized their speech, some people brought note cars and some people brought papers to help them with their speeches but some people forgot their papers so they couldn't practice their speeches yesterday (Tuesday) and today (Wednesday). I kinda felt sad for them. But, fortunately, I got to go! Yay! I had a feeling of fear, nervousness and happiness inside myself. Many people brought their persons' pictures and the ten artifacts but sadly some people forgot both their 10 artifacts AND their persons' picture. But it was really fun seeing many people do their speeches. Some people said jokes about them, some people brought weird/funny props and some even did something fun with their props! I wish tomorrow will be the same thing and I wish that they would be as fun to watch.

~AshwinUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-285848612863856264.post-75303219438761676992016-03-01T18:27:00.001-08:002016-03-01T18:28:02.494-08:00Science Lab<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 18.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">What we did in science lab that was pretty cool was that we talked about “you can't make something out of nothing!” So really we were talking about photosynthesis. But after we switched gears we did something pretty cool but also a little scary. What Mrs Holder told us to do was fill a little container up that is the width of our pinky. Then Mrs Holder passed around 1 antacid pill. Which we will have to put in the water ourselves. She did advise us to put the cap on really quickly. We were all scared. Suddenly we heard a POP or BANG! It was one of our containers exploding towards the ceiling. Another one and another and another they were just blowing up! Some sadly didn't blow up. I called those ones a dud. Mrs Holder announced that she was going to pick them up. But someone said “What about the ones that didn't blow up?” KKAAABANG. Suddenly someone else’s exploded on our table, I jumped out of my seat! Then it turned 9:45 and we had to leave the science lab. That was probably the coolest science blowing-up-things project I have ever done.
I enjoyed doing writing today because I found out that my class will be doing the Living Museum. The Living Museum is where each person in our class would present a speech in front of kindergartners, first graders, second graders, third graders and so on. The speech is going to be about an important African American that did something that impacts our world. For this project, everyone in my class has to pick an African American of our liking. One of the “rules” was that two people can not be the same person, though 1 person can be someone like Matt Baker and the other could be Johnny Bright. After recess my class and I went to Mrs. Lack’s class to learn things we should do to make our speech mesmerizing. At the end of our lesson for the Living Museum each person told their peers how they might start their speech. For instance, “Good morning, my name is _____, and I’m most famous for _____. Therefore I really enjoyed starting the Living Museum and I’m really excited to do a presentation or speech that involves so many wonderful and exciting things.

Thank you for your patience yesterday as we battled the challenges with the math videos. It appears that the new filters on student accounts have blocked my math videos, which is why there were some issues loading them through the student login. Additionally, EDpuzzle was having their own issues. About 9pm I heard from them that it was not just our class experiencing difficulties. At 1am, they sent me an issue saying that the problems have been resolved.

Unfortunately, with the program maintenance that they had to do, our video and all student work was lost for yesterday's assignment and all students were removed from our EDpuzzle class. Because of this, our math time today was spent one of two ways: working on a challenge if students watched the video, or working with me in a small group if they were unable to watch the video or did not understand it.

I expect that the EDpuzzle homework will be working tonight with a few changes. As our class was deleted, I have emailed the students instructions to join a new class. They should not be using their school Google accounts to access the program, at least until the filtering system is adjusted. A new username scheme has been emailed to the students with our new class code. Another option that I forgot to tell students about yesterday is that EDpuzzle has a free iOS app that they may also use to access the material. (Android should be released later in the year.) If there are issues again tonight, please have your child email me so that we can resolve them.

Thank you for your patience and understanding though this adventure!

Thanks for a great first day! I'm sorry that we started with PE and the Science Lab before even spending more than a few minutes in our class, but you all handled it well!

Remember to check the whiteboard outside class tomorrow morning and that we're following the "3 Bs"". I'm looking forward to another great day!

I am super excited to meet you (or get to know some of you better) tomorrow! We have a great adventure ahead of us, filled with many challenges and opportunities to learn and grow.

Tomorrow will be an odd schedule for our first day of school: you'll go straight to PE and then to the science lab before you even come to my classroom. If you are reading this before school starts, I would strongly suggest hanging your backpack on a hook outside my classroom before you go to the blacktop. After science, we will have a day closer to what you would expect the first day of school to be like.

EDIT - We will go to class prior to PE to take attendance and drop off personal belongings.

This will be a great year together! See you all tomorrow!

As you may know, we have out Walk Through the American Revolution this coming Wednesday. I found out today that it was scheduled to begin before we normally have school begin on Wednesdays. Please have your child at school at 8:15am on Wednesday, March 5th, and sent them straight to the classroom. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may be. I have informed Mr. Borris and Mrs. Muldoon of our schedule.

If you are interested in observing the program, you are welcome to join us. We will be going until around 11:30. The host program has asked that younger siblings do not attend because it is a long program. There will be a five minute bathroom break, but we will not have a recess break during the program. Please let me know if you are planning to observe so that we have enough chairs prepared.

We talked about props and costumes in class today. Please do not send in any toy weapons. Do not feel the need to purchase any costumes or props. I showed the students different ideas that they can make with things that are already at home or in the classroom. I would prefer that they are creative with their costumes than have them buy something expensive that will be worn two or three times. (The same costumes can be worn for Colonial Day and the state musical in the future.)

Thank you for your flexibility and for having your child here at 8:15am on Wednesday, March 5! If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks again to the families that shared cooking tools with us and to the parents that came in to help! At the end of the baking, we had about 14 loaves and some miscellaneous shapes/creatures. To thank some of the other teachers and staff members, we decided to give away half of the loaves with a holiday card from the class. It was a great experience and I think we all learned something from it. Here are a few pictures and a link to the recipe that we used. A few parts were slightly modified, but if you wanted to make it again with your child, the result would be almost identical.

I have not been very good at posting messages on here, have I? The most important information is emailed out or sent home on a flier. I will try to be more diligent about posting on here, too.

Welcome to the first official day of the second semester! Just think, we are 1/3 of the way through the school year. Hasn't it flown by? I hope you take the opportunity to think over the first semester and consider all the hard work you have put in. There is no doubt in my mind that we have all had some challenges, but also many successes. Remember, through challenges are some of our greatest learning experiences. Also keep in mind that the second trimester is a great time to make changes if there is an area you want to improve and I am here to help you!

You have all shown me that you can be responsible and have earned the privilege of BYOD. My goal is to have the contract posted under links on Thursday morning. I will also have copies available in class if you need one. Remember that this is optional; I do have two Chromebooks for us to share in class and hope to be getting more.

Also, on a different note, remember that book orders are due on Friday - in person or online - if you want to purchase any books.

I'm looking forward to an even greater trimester with you all!

Mr. Funk

(Parents: I'm also organizing materials for book clubs, hoping to start them in January. If you are interested in helping out please let me know. It not definite yet, but I'm leaning toward having them on Thursday afternoons at the end of the day. More information will come as we get closer.)Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-285848612863856264.post-29428427849731811702013-09-28T17:59:00.001-07:002013-09-28T17:59:23.638-07:00Field Trip Monday!Hey All!

I would say not to forget the field trip on Monday, but I don't think you'll forget. However, please do remember to wear close-toed shoes and layers, including long pants. Weather will not end our trip and I do not want you to be cold and unhappy throughout the trip. Also remember your lunch, with name written on it, and that you may not bring any electronic devices. If your parents want updates, incase there is bad traffic or other issues, they can subscribe to Remind101. The instructions are below. You can subscribe, too, but get their permission first.

Wednesday we are working with buddies and painting. If you'd like to bring in an old shirt or a smock of some sort please feel free. I can store them in class for the year if you'd like.

Don't forget to have your parents sign your progress reports!

Come ready for a great trip Monday! See ya then!

Remember that I will be in meetings all day tomorrow and we will have a sub. I don't anticipate any issues, but remember that you are an example for the other classes. Let's maintain our reputation for being respectful students in the hallways and for all of our teachers.

Make sure that you review science chapter one and complete the study guide so that we can answer any questions on Tuesday before our test on Wednesday. Also, remember that Tuesday is picture day.

When you are in the computer lab, all of your instructions for the day are on the same document as last week. If you deleted it from your drive, ask someone to share it with you.

If you are interested in practicing your songs at home, especially song leaders, here are the lyrics. Click Here John Kanaka starts on page 22 and we will look at one or two others during this week. Below is one version of the song if you'd like to listen to the melody at home, but remember that our words and chorus melody are slightly different.

I'm looking forward to another great week! See you all Tuesday!

I have a few new things to tell you about and a couple of reminders.

First, please try to memorize your email address and password as quickly as possible so we do not need to waste time in class figuring out how to login to GoogleDocs. I am excited that we are able to use this. Parents, if you have any concerns about the email, please let me know. Do know that it is a restricted email address so that it can only exchange messages with people within our domain.

Second, I was able to set up each of you with an online copy of the math book. (It finally worked!) Your username and password instructions have been emailed to your school email account. I do not know how much we will be using it for homework, but it is a great resource if you have questions or want to review the material.

I have looked over the math tests, and want to look over it again before returning it. My goal is to return it to you probably Tuesday so that you can do corrections (I'll give you instructions and details of what I'm looking for) and we can learn from any mistakes.

In your Friday folders you should have found a permission slip for our field trip and an emergency form. Our class is going on Monday the 30th, just over two weeks away. I need both forms returned for students to be able to participate in the field trip. Parents, if you are interested in chaperoning it, please let me know! You will need to have been approved by the district to volunteer before the trip. Click here for a description of chaperon (Tall Sailor) duties.

Thank you to all the parent volunteers. I am working on putting together a schedule of who is willing to help and when they come in. If you have any schedule changes or have not told me that you'd like to help in the class, please let me know!

Also, I have added a calendar to the side of the blog so you can know what is coming up for us. If you have a Google account, you should be able to add the calendar to your Google calendar by clicking on the + button on the bottom right. Have you tried following the website so you can receive updates by email? (I won't see your email address.)

Have a great weekend! If you have any questions feel free to let me know!

I'm sorry to have two posts this weekend. (Feel free to read the earlier one below or click here.) First, it is my goal to upload pictures that some of you have taken to our album, so check the link over the weekend if you'd like to see them. Second, I received an email from Mr. Borris about band and strings. That email is below and I emailed it to the parents that I have email addresses for. If you did not receive an email, please sign up at tinyurl.com/funkps or send me the parent homework (or both!).

Have a great weekend!
This is an email from Jason Borris and Martie Muldoon, the band and strings teachers at all of the elementary schools in Pleasanton. After visiting each school this week, we are very excited to begin band and strings this year. We would like to see all of the interested students this coming week, (9/9 - 9/13) with no instruments. After we have assigned instruments, we will start with instruments the following week. (9/16-9-20)

Can you believe that we have made it through two weeks already? It has been a blast working with you all!

There is no real homework this weekend. Before the football games on Sunday it would be good if you highlight what teams you think are going to win for Quarterback Club, but know that you are not required to watch the games. I will post the scores in class on Monday for our math practice.

We will also have the math test on Monday - going over decimal place value and converting between fractions and decimals. If you'd like some more practice, feel free to try this website (Math Playground) or this one (Sheppard Software). Both programs should be free, so don't sign up to pay anything. Let me know if you have any questions!

As always, I think it would be great if you read over the weekend, but it is not required as part of the reading log.

Have a great weekend! I look forward to seeing you all Monday morning!
